What It Means to Be a Champion for Your Brand


Every brand needs a face. Sports teams have mascots, large companies have influencers and actors, but what about your small business? How to you put a face on it that people will remember, share, and come back to? That face is you. It’s time for you to learn to be a champion for your brand! But how do you do that? How do you grow in name recognition and popularity? In this post, we’re looking at some of the ways you can become a champion for your brand (spoiler alert: it’s a lot easier than you might think)!

Be an expert.

You’re a small business owner, not an NBA player. You don’t have some amazing talent that will grab people’s attention on social media, but you do have one very important thing: your expertise. For local business owners, the #1 thing you can offer your customers is knowledge. If you own a car dealership, make a point to always know every detail of every feature of every car you sell. If you own a coffee shop, explore the entire process of coffee production in-depth. If you own a retail boutique, learn everything you can about the world of fashion.


Your customers come to you to buy a product, but by providing them with knowledge, you’re setting yourself apart as an expert in that field. You become a trusted voice that they will return to in the future. Always be learning and growing, be confident in yourself and your knowledge and ability, and make sure to connect with your customers.

Don’t be afraid to show off what you know.

For most of us, fear begins to creep in as we seek to grow our influence as an expert. We think to ourselves, “Well, what do I know? I’m not an authority on this subject, just someone who knows a lot. People won’t actually want to hear what I have to say, will they?” Fear is the enemy of progress, and it’s important not to allow these fears to hold you back. No you don’t know everything, but that’s not the point. To be an expert in a field, you don’t have to know more than everyone, you just have to know more than your audience.


If they walk away from an interaction with you knowing more about coffee roasting methods or car upholstery materials, you’ve done your job. You’ve taught them something that they didn’t know, and that makes you an expert in their eyes. You have valuable information to offer to the people in your community, and you shouldn’t be afraid to put it out there! Believe in yourself and your ability to make an impact, and great things will happen.

Stop with the “I don’t want to be on camera” nonsense.

We get it. Being on camera, behind a podium in front of a crowd, or in front of a podcast microphone can be daunting. It can be easy to seize up and freak out when people’s attention is solely focused on you. But, the reality is that if you really want to commit yourself to being an expert, a champion for your brand, then you have to get over that fear. In this age of digital media, being an influencer means being someone who can engage an audience on camera. Someone who can speak at events or produce quality podcast content.


Once you get over the hump of fear and nerves, it’s really not that bad. Just relax, be yourself, and rely on the knowledge you have to offer to get you through. Now more than ever, people want to see real-life human beings on social media. The world has grown tired of over-produced, polished content. We see platforms like TikTok taking off for this exact reason. Organic is good. Raw is relatable. People will empathize with you if they see you being a human being. Don’t worry about sounding professional, super intelligent, or polished. Just relax and give the people the information you have to give them. It will all work out, we promise.

“I don’t have time for that”

This is a real issue for many people. If you’re a business owner, you’re already stretched incredibly thin. Life is hectic and you don’t have time for anything extra. But, if you really want to commit yourself to growing your following as a brand champion, you’re going to have to grind. It might require losing some sleep, but it will work in the long run. Almost every time, the person who works the hardest, dedicates the most time to sharpening their knowledge, and produces the most content will come out on top. Becoming a brand champion requires a lot, but it yields even more. Your dedication will be rewarded with real results in the future! Just keep at it.

Advantages to being seen as an expert

There are infinite upsides to developing yourself into an expert in your field. For one, when your customers call your company, they are no longer calling for the company, they’re calling for you. They’ve seen your content on social media or heard from friends that you know everything there is to know about a subject. When they call, they want to speak to you directly; you’ve created name recognition! By being a champion for your brand, you put a face on the company that people will remember and come back to.


Another advantage is that people begin to trust you. They start to see that you know more than anyone in the area about car upholstery materials, so they want to return to you next time. They start to seek your advice on things, referring their friends to you as well. When someone has reached a certain level in their field, you can’t help but share their content or refer your friends to them! That’s the level you want to get to. So much of an expert that people can’t help but tell their friends about you and your company. Being a champion for your brand and an expert in your field will take your company to the next level! It’s worth all the work.

What does it look like to be a champion for your brand?

Okay, so you’ve decided that it’s time for you to step up your game and become an expert in your field. How do you actually go about doing that? Well, one simple thing you can do is to start a blog or podcast. Just put yourself out there, set your ideas forth, and let people start to see and share them. You’ve got to start somewhere, and a blog or podcast is a relatively easy way to begin. Social media is critical for getting yourself out there, so make sure to be pumping out consistent, quality content! If you’re a coffee shop owner, you could make videos of yourself explaining the roasting process, making different drinks, or talking about the differences between different beans.


Make your content simple, relatable, interesting, and engaging. Like we said above, be human! Talk to the audience like you would any customer and be yourself. Establishing yourself on social media and producing quality content is a huge step toward getting recognized as an expert! You can also write articles and submit them to industry publications or magazines or volunteer to speak at local clubs or conferences. Anything to get your name out there!


Whatever you do, make sure to do it consistently and with earnest. If you’re passionate about your field, it will show. People will start to view you as an expert and want to come back to your company time and time again. Go out there and make a difference!
